The basics

What is ADAS calibration, in plain English?

ADAS calibration is the process of aligning the cameras, radars and sensors in your car so the safety systems (lane keep, emergency braking, adaptive cruise, etc.) know exactly where they're pointing. Get this wrong by a degree or two and the systems either don't work, or work wrong. We've got a longer explanation on the why you need calibration page.

Does my car actually have ADAS?

Probably yes, if it was registered after about 2018. ADAS became standard across most new cars then, and is mandatory on all new cars sold in the UK and EU from July 2024. Quick test: does your car have lane-keep assist, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, or a 360° camera? If yes to any, it has ADAS. If you tell us the make, model and year, we can confirm.

Do I need calibration if my car has no warning lights?

Often, yes. Many cars don't display a "calibration required" warning even when the sensors are clearly out of alignment — the system just keeps using bad data. If you've recently had any of the triggers (windscreen replacement, accident, suspension work) and the systems are behaving oddly, calibration is the most likely fix. If your dash is clear and nothing's changed, you're probably fine.

How often do I need it done?

It's not a routine service — it's triggered by events. The trigger events are: windscreen replacement, accident or impact, suspension/geometry work, sensor or camera replacement, or a specific "calibration required" warning. If none of those have happened, you don't need calibration. If any of those have happened, you do.

Static vs dynamic calibration — what's the difference?

Static is done with the car parked, using physical calibration targets at precise distances and angles. Dynamic is done by driving the car at specific speeds while it learns from the road. The right method depends on the make and model — most VW Group, BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Volvo use static; most Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai and Kia use dynamic. Some need both. We do whichever your car requires.

After a windscreen replacement

My windscreen fitter said calibration was included. Do I still need this?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Some windscreen chains do a proper static calibration on-site, and some quietly skip it or do a dynamic-only calibration when the car actually requires static. If you were handed the car back without a calibration certificate, or the dashboard is still showing warnings, it almost certainly wasn't done properly. Send us a photo of your invoice and we'll tell you straight whether it's been done.

The fitter drove the car round the block. Was that the calibration?

Maybe. If your car requires dynamic calibration only, then yes — a drive at specific speeds in the right conditions is the calibration. If your car requires static calibration (most VW, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volvo), then no — a road drive doesn't replace target-based static calibration, even if the warning light goes out. Tell us the make and model and we'll tell you which one your car needs.

Can you come straight after the windscreen is replaced?

Yes, often on the same day. Many of our trade-partner windscreen replacement bays book us in to follow them — they replace the glass in the morning, we calibrate in the afternoon, the customer drives away with the certificate. If you're a retail customer who's just had a windscreen done elsewhere, we can usually be with you within 24–48 hours.

Why didn't the windscreen company do it themselves?

A few reasons. Some don't have the right equipment for your specific car. Some only do dynamic calibrations and don't realise (or don't say) when static is required. Some sub-contract calibration out to specialists like us — they replace the glass, we calibrate. And occasionally, some skip it entirely and hope the customer doesn't notice. That last one is rarer than it used to be, but not unheard of.

After an accident or impact

I had a small bump in a car park. Do I need calibration?

Probably, especially if it was a front or rear impact. Radar sensors in particular are sensitive — a knock to a front bumper that doesn't even leave a mark on the paint can shift the radar by a few degrees, which is enough to throw off adaptive cruise and AEB. If your car's behaving oddly or showing warning lights, get it checked. If nothing's changed in how it drives, you might still want a pre-scan to confirm.

The body shop didn't mention calibration. Should I worry?

Worth asking. Most established body shops know calibration is part of any modern ADAS-equipped repair — either they do it in-house or they sub it out. Smaller independent shops occasionally miss it, especially if the customer hasn't asked. If you've had a front-end repair and there's no calibration line on your invoice, ask explicitly. We're happy to take a look if there's any doubt.

Will calibration be on my insurance claim?

If the repair is being covered by an insurance claim, calibration almost always is too — it's recognised as a necessary part of the repair. Our reports are designed to be insurer-accepted: pre-scan, calibration record, post-scan, signed certificate. We can invoice your insurer or repair shop directly if that's easier.

Pricing & insurance

How much does it cost?

From from £149 for a single-system calibration (e.g. front camera only after a windscreen replacement). Multi-system calibrations after collision work cost more — usually £200–£400 depending on how many systems need doing. Premium-vehicle work (night vision, lidar) can be higher. We always quote a fixed price before booking — no surprises on the day.

What's included in the price?

Pre-scan, calibration itself (static and/or dynamic as required), post-scan, signed calibration certificate, full documentation pack emailed to you. Within our core coverage area there's no travel charge. For jobs outside the core area we sometimes add a modest travel fee, which we'll quote upfront.

Will my insurance cover the cost?

If the calibration is needed because of an accident or repair that's covered by an insurance claim — yes, almost always. If you're paying directly (e.g. after a windscreen replacement done outside an insurance claim) then it's out-of-pocket. Some glass-only policies cover associated calibration, some don't — check your policy.

Do you take card payment?

Yes — card, bank transfer or cash on the day. Trade accounts are invoiced on monthly terms.

Booking & the visit

How long does the job take?

Most jobs are done in 60 to 90 minutes on your driveway. A single-system calibration (front camera only, say) can be 45 minutes. A full multi-system calibration on a car with lots of sensors — 360° cameras, blind spot, lane keep, AEB, adaptive cruise — can take closer to two hours. Premium kit (night vision, lidar) longer still. We'll give you a realistic time estimate when you book.

How soon can you come?

Within our core coverage area, usually same week — often within 48 hours. For urgent jobs (you're stuck without a working car, or a trade partner has a customer waiting), we can sometimes come same-day. For routine bookings we tend to be 2–5 working days out. Call us and ask — we know our schedule.

Do you work weekends or evenings?

Saturdays by appointment — yes, regularly. Evenings if it's the only time that works for you. Sundays only for trade emergencies. If your week is jammed, just ask.

What do you need on site to do the job?

A reasonably flat, level surface (driveway, car park, workshop floor — all fine), enough clearance in front of the car for the calibration targets (usually 4–5 metres), and shelter from heavy rain or direct sunlight if possible. Most domestic driveways are fine. If you're not sure, send us a photo and we'll confirm.

Can you come to my workplace instead of my home?

Absolutely — we do a lot of work in office car parks. As long as there's somewhere flat to park, ideally with some shelter, we can work there. Just tell us the address and we'll check the parking situation on Street View if needed.

Can I drive the car straight after calibration?

Yes, immediately. There's no curing time or anything to wait for. We hand you the certificate, you drive off.

Technical questions

What if I just ignore the warning light?

The honest answer: your car will probably still drive. But the safety systems — autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise — either won't work, or will work badly. They might trigger when they shouldn't, or fail to trigger when they should. That's a road safety issue and, in the event of a claim or MOT issue, a paper trail you don't want. It's cheap to fix and it doesn't take long. Get it sorted.

Can ADAS calibration cause a MOT failure?

An active ADAS-related dashboard warning can be a contributory failure under current MOT rules. Calibration warnings count. Policy in this area is tightening — testers are increasingly being trained to look for ADAS warnings as part of the safety check. Worth getting cleared before MOT day.

What equipment do you use?

Autel IA600 mobile calibration systems — the same equipment used by main dealers. Full set of OE-specified target boards covering every major UK and European manufacturer. Professional-grade diagnostics tools for pre-scan, programming and post-scan. We're not making do with budget kit.

What makes and models can you do?

All UK and European OEMs: VW Group (VW, Audi, Škoda, SEAT, Porsche), BMW Group, Mercedes-Benz, JLR (Jaguar, Land Rover), Stellantis (Peugeot, Citroën, Vauxhall, Fiat), Hyundai-Kia, Toyota-Lexus, Honda, Nissan, Volvo, Tesla, Ford, Mazda, Subaru, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Renault, Dacia, MG, BYD. If we can't do your car, we'll tell you up front and (if we can) point you somewhere that can.

Is your calibration as good as a main dealer's?

Functionally, yes. We use the same OE-spec equipment, the same target patterns, the same calibration procedures from the manufacturer's service documentation. The post-calibration data we produce is identical to what a dealer would. The difference is we're a specialist (calibration is all we do, every day) rather than a generalist, and we come to you rather than asking you to drop the car off for a day.

For workshops & trade

Do you offer trade rates?

Yes — see the trade services page for the overview. Trade rates depend on volume, but generally a fair discount on retail pricing plus 30-day account terms for established partners. Call the trade desk to discuss.

Can you bill the insurer directly?

For body shop work, yes — we can invoice your insurer or repair-network principal directly, with full documentation attached. Many of our body shop partners prefer this because it keeps the calibration cost off their job ledger.

Are your reports Thatcham-aligned?

Yes. Our documentation pack includes everything insurers and Thatcham-aligned repair networks expect: pre-scan with fault codes, calibration record with method (static/dynamic) and target references, post-scan to confirm clear, and a signed certificate.

What's your turnaround for trade jobs?

For established trade partners, usually next-working-day or scheduled to your booked slot. We block out trade-partner time in our schedule each week so we can react to short-notice bookings.
